Old member returning.
Hi all,
I was a member on here briefly a decade or so ago having rescued an MR2 turbo from scrap (big ends gone). I really regretted selling it and have been keeping an eye out since.
Anyway, I've just bought another one which I'm intending to keep this time. It's been off the road for 3 or 4 years as it wouldn't start. 99% an electrical fault and I'm an electronics engineer so hopefully an easy fix.
It's a silver T reg but that was date of import, it's actually a rev 2. I'm just hoping that doesn't cause problems with the MOT.
My other toys are mostly GT4's which are remarkably similar mechanically so I'm already geared up with spares and knowledge.

Re: Old member returning.
Welcome back, thanks for your support.
Probably worth checking the ECU for leaking capacitors (and track damage caused by the leaks) It's becoming a common problem with MK2's

Re: Old member returning.
It came via a friend who buys and sells Celicas so he'd already done the ECU caps as first port of call. The actual fault was the main ECU relay duff. It looked brand new but had an open circuit coil.
It has a P/S light on the dash which I'm guessing is power steering and an MOT failure. Is this just a fluid level switch or is it more involved ?
Ask away with any electronics questions, I've been an electronics and software designer for a few decades now.
A picture with one of my other toys - actually the car that made me sell my other MR2 when it arrived as I thought I had too many cars. Silly mistake, I've bought a few more since than.

edit - for some reason the img code isn't working so I've just left the link for now. Not used phpbb since the old gt4dc days.

Re: Old member returning.
img code is working fine

The problem is your link, its http, need to be secure i.e. https. If you can't use a secure host then use the attachments option to upload the image to our server and place it inline on your post https://mr2oc.co.uk/forum/topic/adding- ... 67439.html
Re the P/S light, there's a seperate diagnostic system for the P/S system. Download the BGB https://mr2oc.co.uk/downloads/1993-sw20 ... nload.html and look in section SR63 page 1621 for info on the diagnostic system

Re: Old member returning.
It was code 31, brushes. As expected as it's the only code that allows the pump to keep running.
Brushes are fine, the loom was damaged. All 3 wires on the signal plug were cut and the insulation torn off on the 2 power wires. I suspect maybe someone had been a bit butch changing a battery and clobbered the loom and plugs. Thankfully there was just enough wire sticking out of the plug that I could solder new tails on and make the connections, now working fine with no warning light.
I also made a new battery clamp as the standard one is missing, along with the spare wheel.
MOT booked for Thursday. Fingers crossed as it's been off the road for 3 or 4 years, though the past mots were mostly tyres and wipers.

Re: Old member returning.
MOT failed on a long list of minor stuff that I'd expect from a car that's been stood for a few years. Steering rack gaitor, several brakes binding or not working, tyres.
It also seems very lacking in responsiveness and power, especially at low revs. Most likely is timing has been set without the E1-TE1 link, especially as there seems to be an issue with the E1 connection in the diagnostic box. I had to link Tc1 to engine to get the flash codes from the steering. Could also be cam a notch out or wastegate stuck on aftermarket downpipe.
Hopefully should be through the MOT within the 2 weeks allowed and I can have some fun. There's a local autotest on 7th December which I may go for. I don't normally do the ones from this club as 4wd is not allowed.

Re: Old member returning.
Had a trial by fire on its maiden voyage from office to home the other day. The heavens opened and it was like driving along a river bed with floods and debris. It was misfiring from water in the ignition (undertrays were separate and I haven't fitted them yet). The main beam switch has packed up and I had to hold the stick back in the flash position to get beam. Finally it got a puncture the last mile from home and there was no spare or jack.
It seems the tyres are an unusal size 225/50x15. None available locally and I can only find nankang or toyo online. Do people normally swap to another size to get a better choice ? If all else fails I have a set or 2 in my Celica collection with dual stud pattern so I can go 16"

Re: Old member returning.
That's a DVLA error. It should have been given an age related plate based on the year of manufacture/first registration.Chris_D wrote: 28/10/25 23:17 It's a silver T reg but that was date of import, it's actually a rev 2. I'm just hoping that doesn't cause problems with the MOT.
What date is showing at Section 4.B of the V5C? For an import it should be different from the one at Section 4.C
1992 is highly relevant because the applicable CO and HC figures for the test changed on 1st August. See the flowcharts here.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspect ... tion-8-2-1
Also, check the VIN number. If it is lower than SW200059266 then the higher figures apply. See page 174 here.

That's the stock OEM tyre size for the rear of a Mk2. Toyo TR1s are readily available from Blackcircles. Choose the fitted option and you'll get a list of local places based on your postcode. Pick one and the tyres will be delivered there. Just rock up at the appointed time. Job done.Chris_D wrote: 07/12/25 21:35 It seems the tyres are an unusal size 225/50x15.
