JIS Screwdrivers

Post by Ric Ochet »

Might well be teaching Grandmother to suck eggs with this, but for anyone that doesn't know . The Japanese use Japanese Industry standard (JIS) fastners . The screws look like Phillips but are slightly different. Use a Phillips and it will cam out and ruin the screw head , use a JIS screwdriver and you will delight in solid lock into the screw it provides.

Not sure on the specific geometry of pozidrive but why use anything other than a pozidrive bit? Phillips and JIS look almost identical but Phillips is designed to cam out to prevent overtightening , JIS isn't. Can't tell you the number of screws on small motorcycles I've wrecked in my younger days because I didn't know the difference and I've often seen damaged screws on all Japanese stuff since when you just know someone has used a Phillips

Yeah, something I also found out in recent years. You can spot JIS screws by the single dot on the screw head.

Don't they also have a different groove angle to Philips and Pozidrive, causing Philips and pozi drivers to slip? The same problem using Philips drivers on pozi and vice versa.
